What do you love about teaching?
I love working with the wide variety of ages, personalities, and talents. It is a blessing to be able to encourage students to develop their talents and interests to honor and serve God, and to use their gifts to help lead others to Christ. I also love being able to teach something that I enjoy music!
What do you enjoy most about being at AHC?
I am very thankful to be part of a ministry that seeks to honor Christ and strives to train young people according to God's love, wisdom, and principles. It is also a blessing to be part of a staff that cares and prays for one another and shares much joy and laughter.
How did you end up becoming a teacher?
When I was little, there were many things I wanted to be when I grew up. But I was too short to be a flight attendant and didn't have the stomach to be a nurse. Hotel management and food catering seemed like fun, but not for long. One thing I always enjoyed was being with kids. While I was in eighth grade, my piano teacher asked me to help in piano classes at various public and private schools, and I continued as a teacher's aide through high school. I learned some pretty neat ways to teach young children musical concepts, some of which I still use today. My violin teacher in high school tried to discourage me from going into teaching music and thought computer or mechanical engineering would be a more practical career, but I had no interest in that. God led me to attend a Christian college where I was able to study what I love - music, and learn how to teach and share that with others.
How do you invest in the lives of young people outside of class?
I take them in-door rock climbing and hiking. I introduce students to Chinese food, go with them to camps and special music events, and talk with them throughout the day--whether it be in passing, or at lunch, or they come to the music room to play around on instruments.
Name some interesting jobs you had before you became a teacher
I spent one summer working as an assistant in the cosmetic lab of a private-owned business and another summer as a receptionist for a chiropractor
What nicknames do you have?
They're all in Chinese!
